Yesterday I called my oldest dearest friend from High School. We are very Old friends (I'm 52. HS was a long time ago!). My son is a junior and 17. We're doing the SAT, college tour etc. journey now. I was feeling confused, sad, frustrated, just generally yucky.
I was complaining about if only he would work a little harder, do the SAT prep tests, be more proactive. You know just as gung ho as we were. Then reality struck! You can't decieve a fellow traveler. My friend laughingly reminded me that we really didn't see doing really well in school as all that important and we never practiced for the SATs! In fact I remembered how I turned down an invite to be in the Honors curicullum and my parents didn't say boo! They respected my decision. I've grown up to have a sucessful career, and I'm generally happy. Well, as happy as any mother can be worrying about the teenager she so dearly loves!
We both laughed and realized that we didn't wake up until college. I felt much better.
He's a great kid. He's funny, smart, loving, and talented. He's a talented guitarist who wants to major in Music or Music Education. He's following his passion. That's something I learned from my parent's who supported me in pursuing a career in art. Even though I know my father was worried that it was too hard for his little girl.
Yes, he drives me crazy! It's not easy. But when I hear beautiful music coming out from behind his door and it's him playing it, it's all worth it! Just so you don't get jealous most of the music that comes out from behind his door is heavy metal! There is hope, however. He has discovered jazz, classical, and musical theater. He's in the school jazz band, and the pit ochestra for the play this year. He's playing Gershwin!
My friend (whose son is a freshman in college) and I agreed we are proud of our sons. However, we can't wait until they're over 21!
