My teenager will be 19 in a couple of weeks and started smoking dope last summer. I have been to counciling and my teenager also went to one session. The next time I went to counciling I was told I have done a great job at raising my child and that my teenager has definate goals in life and I should be proud of myself. Should I be more concerned that the smoking started in the late teen years as opposed to an early age? He was so anti-drug until he joined the football team in his senior year of high school. It was near graduation when he started smoking dope. He is at the point where he would like to move out on his own, so I don't really have him under my thumb like I would a 15 year old. He works 30 hours a week and goes to the community college full time so he is responsible to an extent. He has a car and pays his own payments and the insurance. It seems like when he started hanging out with the "boys" he started experimenting with alcohol and smoking pot.

Dear Parent,
The fact that your son started experimenting later in life with drugs is a positive. The later folks begin using, the less the chance that they will progress beyond the harmless experimentation stage of use. So your therapist is likely thinking this when she tells you your son is doing fine. Just grit your teeth, keep "dispassionately" letting him know that you cannot approve of his use of drugs, keep loving him and likely things will be fine. Keep us all posted.
