My 18 year old daughter and my 3 mo. old grandson live with my husband and I. We've been through quite a lot the past few years and are on the upswing I believe. She recently admitted to me that she has been smoking--says very limited 2-4 per day. I've talked about all the bad things about smoking but she just wants to do it and realizes it's addictive. She doesn't smoke in the house or car. Any ideas of how to get her to quit?
Thanks!

Dear Mom,
That low level of smoking usually does not represent addiction (yet) but symbolizes something else, such as a reward, rebellion, identity feature, and so on. See if she can identify what those 3 cigarettes mean to her, and then to find another way to get what she wants. Quote me in saying that using 3 cigarettes a day is like playing Russian Roulette---the "round" of addiction may not go off but is 3 cigarettes worth that risk?
Take care.
