Hello Dr Bradley

We have a 14.5 year old daughter who was a challenge since she turned 12. She has no impulse control , is verbally abusing us and being an only child ( and late on top of it) feels everyhing is due to her.
Lately she has been having problems at school with friends and decided that he best way to deal with it is to 'hide' in a 'boarding school'. I read your opinion on bording school in several posts and I agree with it.
Our problem is that we need a therapist who can see her and decide if such an option - which we can ill afford - will be beneficial for her.
We live in Canada (Toronto) and was wondering if you can recomend a psychiatrist who will be able to spend some time with us and especially her.
We went for family therapy last year with bad results - we used a friend's referral which turned out to be completely wrong for our situation. If you cannot reply on the forum - not sure about rule regarding referals - can you please reply to my private e-mail?

Dear Irina,
I'm afraid that I don't know of a Toronto shrink to suggest; however, I would talk with everyone I know in your area who deals with kids (school counselors, social service agencies, juvenile police officers) to get some names. When one name appears twice, check her/him out.
Good luck, and please remember that in most circumstances, boarding schools do not fix family problems. Only the immense power of the love of a family can do that.
