Doc Mike,
My almost 16 year old daughter is failing her classes. She is struggling with other issues as well, and we are seeking help. Things have settled down a little, so I thought I'd offer her a reward for better grades. I told her she could have a cell phone if she brought her grades up to a B (she used to be an A student). I will be getting weekly progress reports from her teachers; stating if required work was turned in, and what her test scores were. My daughter wants the phone now, and if she gets an unacceptable report from a teacher then she will surrender the phone until a satisfactory report is received. I'm wondering if it is better to wait until I have some good reports from her teachers before giving her the phone. What do you think?

Dear Mom:
A good rewards system offers NO advance credit. She must first earn the phone with a good week or month's report from her teachers in order to get the phone. The idea is to always be in the position of providing a reward (which brings a smile) versus doing a take away (which brings anger and resentment). Also, think of using a prepaid card system so that she can earn her minutes with ongoing good reports.
Good luck and keep us posted.
